Got an email yesterday from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI): they've awarded me the General Work-In-Progress runner-up grant!
To back up and explain, I applied in March:
That was for the 1st-place grant of $2,000. The great thing is: the runner-up grant will still cover tuition. Thank you, SCBWI!
BUT -- the coolest part of this grant news? Another of the grant recipients is in my local chapter of SCBWI! Warm congrats to Lupe Ruiz-Flores for her Multicultural WIP Grant to complete Dulce's Quest for the Crown. Sounds intriguing, right? And, as you can see from Lupe's bio, she used to work as an aeronautic engineer.
Takes all kinds to be writers, and some of us are totally math nerds. Just one of the many things I love about this community.
To back up and explain, I applied in March:
"I propose to use this Work-in-Progress Grant to complete Daughter of the Dead, a paranormal novel for young-adult readers that takes place in a Depression-era funeral home and mortuary (first chapter and synopsis attached). Grant funds would allow me to take an online college course, History of Mortuary Science, offered through San Antonio College’s Department of Mortuary Science. Taught by Associate Professor and licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer Mary E. Mena, the course covers two credit hours (approx. total in-state tuition of $450) and requires two prerequisite modules (self-evaluation and orientation modules required of all first-time online students, $0). Grant funds will also cover required printed course material (approx. $150) and allow me to take unpaid leave from my day job to complete this course and related modules ($1,400 for approx. 85 hours). I believe this course will give me insight into early 20th-century mortuary practices that will be invaluable to creating a credible and accurate setting for DAUGHTER. If awarded a Work-In-Progress Grant, I will report my use of grant funds to SCBWI’s Grant Committee by December 31, 2012."
