This bonus food post comes thanks to Sarah Mullen Gilbert, a fellow writer and also a dairy farmer and cheesemaker.
Sarah mentioned homemade ricotta pancakes the other day (there they are in the photo), so I asked if she would post the recipe.
She gave us two: the cheese and the pancakes!
The book Sarah uses: HOME CHEESEMAKING by Ricki Carroll
The cheesemaking supply site Sarah uses: New England Cheesemaking Supply Company (also Ricki Carroll's)
Looking forward to making both -- thanks, Sarah!
Have you guys ever tried to make cheese? Were you successful? What resources did you use?

7 ate pie:
I've made Cheddar cheese for work. The cheese was edible, though I never could get the food coloring to take. And I've ordered supplies from the company you mentioned.
Yes! I've been making homemade ricotta for a couple of years from this VERY simple recipe (no special supplies required) - comes out perfectly delicious every time:

Have used it to make pancakes, lasagna, etc...but my favorite is simply spread on a piece of good toasted bread, with a little honey drizzled over the top. Insanely good stuff.
Oh my gosh, those look soooo good! Nope, never tried to make cheese, but I love the cheese other people make!
Sandra - were you using annatto?
Colette - Gonna try your recipe, too - sounds like a cinch.
Julie - I know! I just picked up some cheese at the farmers' market. It's made by local place called Humble House. Yum.
Love the toasted bread and honey idea! Thanks for posting, Shannon :)
shan - forgot this when I posted before, but I sometimes use the homemade ricotta to make a delish - and easy - gnocchi (original recipe from a friend who grew up in Milan, so it's got provenance ;-) Unfortunately, no blog (yet), so I can't post it online – but I once wrote it up in Word for my sis and still have the doc – could email it to you, if you’d like.
Yes, please! (nomadshan at gmail.)
Exciting!
