Children's Book Week: Tasty Tales

In the first year of this blog, I did a series called Thursday Pie Lit, wherein I featured books that in turn featured memorable food descriptions. Several were children's books.

In fact, once upon a time, I considered opening a bakery that featured goods from literature because there's some fun, tasty stuff on those pages. I still have the binder I used to organize the photocopied recipes.

Anyhoo, as Children's Book Week intersects with today's daily special -- food -- I offer links to the Pie Lit posts on kids' books. Enjoy!

My kid is currently big on Sendak's CHICKEN SOUP WITH RICE. And it's not strictly about food, but my favorite part of HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON is the pie scene. Not just that he lunches on 9 kinds of pie, but that he gives the leftovers to a hungry moose and a deserving porcupine. Very egalitarian of young Harold.

How could I have read HAROLD and not remember the 9-pie scene?! CHICKEN SOUP W/ RICE - your kid has good taste.

*considers such soup for dinner*

Hm, this post is making me hungry. Do you know the picture book THE RUNAWAY DINNER? It's funny but also a little disturbing, maybe because the food is almost the same size as the humans. :-)

Green Eggs and Ham...Stone Soup....If You Give a Mouse a Cookie...all faves of my kids when they were little. Also Chick Soup with Rice, of course. And both kids are now literarily and culinarily (are those words?) inclined college students...coincidence? Who knows ;-)

Anna - will have to check that out!

Mom - giant pancakes from the sky, with butter and syrup? Right on!

Colette - I love Stone Soup. Sounds like you raised your kids right. :)
