Tonight at 8:59 I'll finish my fourth decade.
This is maybe better news for me than you.
Except I've decided to celebrate with a contest!
Interested?
Here's the deal: Leave a comment telling me one way my 40s will be even more rockin' than my 30s. Bonus points for funny. In fact, if I wet myself laughing, you'll probably win. And since I'm 40 now, that's pretty likely.
If I pick your entry, you get a $40 gift credit for any online retailer that sells books -- print, ebook, audiobook, whatever. IndieBound, Fictionwise, iTunes, Barnes & Noble, Target, and Amazon come to mind, but you'll pick your favorite.
Sound good?
Awesome. Have at!
[Also: Deadline is 9am Central, Wednesday, 24 March.]
[Also-also: This contest is cross-posted at Facebook, so comment at either place. It's also on Twitter, so feel free to tweet your entry @nomadshan.]

12 ate pie:
Well, if you're like me, turning 40 means you'll injure yourself more easily - last month, for example, I strained a muscle in my neck by...not doing anything at all, actually. HOW IS THAT ROCKIN', you ask? Well, when you aggravate that hamstring or trapezius muscle or whatever, you'll be forced to spend more time in a physically inactive state, which may lead to frustration, which may lead to an irrational decision to combat the forces of time by leaving the country, starting up an elite strike force of international crime-fighting disco-dancing ninja warriors recruited from the 40-and-over population of the world, leading to a year of fabulous saving-the-world adventures across the globe!
You're going to ROCK your forties. But then again, I sort of expect you to rock every decade.
I'm turning 40 this year, too. You know what I'm looking forward to? Menopause! The heart palpitations. The inexplicable weight gain. Chin hairs. The catalogs full of elastic-waist pants.
Oh, but I kid.
It's simple math. The thirties were twice as good as the twenties. Therefore, the forties will be four times as good. Here's to publication, travel, pie and caring less about things like ass fat and chin stubble.
I'm not yet in my 40s, so you'll have to confirm this for me - but it's my experience that the women I know in their 40s are more centered, self-assured and self-confident than the women I know under 40. So, I say embrace your maturity and rock it.
And, hey, you can now officially qualify as a cougar, so that's cool.
Happy Birthday.
Emily
Happy Birthday!
I have to disagree with captainstupendous. In your 40s you will injure yourself less often (of course this might only work if you were already injury prone).
In your 40s you will know more about writing and life than you did in your 30s, which is sure to lead to book contracts (one can hope).
In your 40s, you can justify anything by using one of these excuses:
"I'm going through menopause (or peri-menopause); don't judge me."
"It's on my bucket list."
"I'm going to gain weight anyway, so I might as well treat myself to birthday cake for breakfast!" (Or cookies, chocolate, etc. the rest of the year.)
"Elastic pants and comfortable shoes are the new black."
Hope you have a great birthday!
OK, I've got it: In your 40s, your nieces and nephews will get to the "fun age" where you can be the Cool Aunt and send them home to their parents when they cop an attitude.
Enjoy and have some cake for me :)
One thing that rocks about you turning 40 is that you're getting there a few months before me - thus making me feel a wee bit younger.
Wait. I was supposed to tell you how turning 40 will rock for you wasn't I?
I think the best thing about turning 40 is getting there and still keeping the part of you that are "young". For me, I feel better, look better and am much more centered than I ever was in my 30's - yet I haven't grown up so much that occasionally staying out till 4 am and harassing the poor cashier at the 24 hr McDonald's is out of the question.
This might not be something to be really proud of - but there it is.
So as long as you're on the same kind of path - I think turning 40 should rock. :)
The happiest of birthdays to you Shan!
Happy Birthday!
Your forties will rock because you will be a published author during them and beyond.
'Nuff said.
Happy Birthday to...me!!
I was born first! March 23rd is mine!!!
I may be 43 but I called dibs.
Now move over because today is my day!
(isn't being 40-something fun?)
Rats! I missed your deadline, didn't I and having experienced this turning 40 business I thought I'd be a shoe in as a winner.
Well, one thing about leaving behind the self-conscience 40's is you don't mind lagging behind quite as much as you did when you were 30. Happy 4th decade.
Mike - check, check, and check - frustrating inactivity? Disco music? Globe-trotting? Your powers of extrapolation are eerily accurate. WIN!
Shaun - no, YOU rock! Thanks, dude.
Martha - the phrase "ass fat and chin stubble" has earned you an unforeseen runner-up prize!
Emily - I'll keep the cougar den hot till you get here.
Stephanie - I like the bucket list excuse. :D
Sarah - We've already told everyone they can send us their kids when they turn teen + 'tude-y. Tough love at the aunt + uncle's place. :)
Krissy - I hope I'm never too old to stay up till 4am. See also my note to Emily, above.
Cole - that is my hope!
Iapetus999 - I'm one in a looooong line of 3-23ers. Happy birthday!
C. Lee - Glad you stopped by - thanks!
I missed the deadline (I think), so I'll just add three things:
1) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!
2) Holy crap, you're 40? Your pic totally makes you look at least a decade younger.
3) When I was a wee little thing, I used to think that when adults turned a certain age, like 40, then they could suddenly gain the ability to read minds. I guess because my mom always seemed to know what I was up to. But I totally believed that adults had this magic ability, and just never told kids that.
4) SO NOW I CAN ONLY ASSUME YOU CAN READ MY MIND AND KNOW MY EVIL THOUGHTS....
