If I Had a Million Dollars...

...I'd still be crying in my (very expensive) cocoa.

Solo projects, theatre, etc.  Also, a cocaine bust and court-ordered cold-turkeyness.

...

Bummed to credit terrytoons' tweets for this news. Harumph.

Beware the Bossy Voices in Your Head

From an interview on This American Life (episode: "Plan B") by host Ira Glass of Barry Keenan, a guy who, in the 60s, wrote up a business plan and decided the best way to raise money for it would be to kidnap and ransom Frank Sinatra, Jr, which he did, shortly before he was caught, convicted, and sent to prison...

Ira Glass: I wonder if the fact that you constructed such an elaborate web of logic with your business plan, if that made the kidnapping seem so reasonable, and even good for the Sinatras. I wonder if that prevented you at the time from comprehending what you were putting them through. You know?

Barry Keenan: Oh, absolutely. I had it so rationalized and justified... I had God's approval that this thing was being divinely blessed.

Glass:  What was the sign that it had God's approval?

Keenan:  Well, God talked to me, particularly when I would go to church and light a candle and be still and I would hear God talking to me and telling me what I had to do, and He was very definite about nobody being hurt, and, um, I had to pay the money back.

Glass:  As you've gotten older and sobered up and gotten wiser, does God still talk to you?

Keenan:  Oh, no, no,  that went away when I got sober. And also got psychiatric help. So, you know, when I hear voices these days, I don't pay any attention to them.

Revision Ho!

Using the cool space Dave made me to organize revision round #2 on JACK.

I usually use a spreadsheet to do this but wanted to try a physical method (using paper kinda gives me the heebies, but I'll recycle it). Chris and I use Track Changes to... track changes... in the manuscript. Cool feature, and yes, I am a latecomer to the Word party.

Are you a physical reviser or a digital reviser?

13.1...5...17...7...2

13.1
The number of miles Dave and I each did on elliptical trainers yesterday. WOOT. Dave set the challenge a couple weeks ago, and we completed it side by side. (Aw.) He watched Live Free Or Die Hard. I had I Put a Spell on You scrolling on my phone's eReader. Not all that sore yet. YET.

5
The time this afternoon when Magik's next proposal to The Zachry Foundation is due. I just gave them a final report on their 2008 grant, used to install a new front-of-house lighting truss. It's shiny and awesome.

17
The date, tomorrow, of Dave's dad's brithday. Happy Birthday early, Ed!

7
The number of Harry Potter covers artist M. S. Corley has redesigned to look like Penguin Classics.

2
The number of manuscripts I'll be revising soon. Secret Agent Chris is working up his next round of revision notes for JACK. I estimate (without seeing them - hahaha) I should be able to address them in a couple weeks. Unless I opened Pandora's Box with something I added in the first round!  Today I also begin a revision workshop with Lani Diane Rich, best-selling author of romantic comedy and co-creator of the Will Write For Wine podcast, during which I'll revise the draft of DOG-BOY I finished in October. The workshop is structured as an email loop (leader + 6 pupils), so I'm interested to see what comes of it.

What numbers are meaningful to you today?

Bye, Aunt Did

One of my great aunts died yesterday morning, and I wanted to put a few words about her here.

She was 89. She outlived her husband by 37 years. She was one of my grandfather Ivan's two sisters. She was, in fact, the last remaining sibling of that family. Her dynamic with my grandfather sometimes reminded me of mine with Dwayne.

My favorite thing about her, though, was her name.

She began as Mary Catherine, which became Katy, which became Katydid, which became Did.

I'll miss her and wish her daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren the best.

Easy Fish

You need:
  • 2 fish filets
  • paprika
  • olive oil
  • 1 can stewed Italian-style tomatoes
  • fresh rosemary sprigs

Put the filets in a baking dish, sprinkle w/ paprika. Pour tomatoes around. Place rosemary on top. Drizzle olive oil lightly over all. Bake @ 350F for 25 min.

We used Costco's frozen wild mahi mahi filets (thawed in cold water before prep). The pix didn't come out, but Dave served the fish w/ UnSuccotash (oven-roasted mix of edamame, corn, and garlic cloves) and a white bean-gremolata spread w/ pita. Also, green salad + Pinot Evil pinot noir.

Very light, very tasty.

Wine Rec: Les Jamelles Pinot Noir

Very smooth French table wine. Also, CHEAP. Here it is paired w/ photographically-distorted courses of a Dave Dinner: barbeque chicken, mashed fingerling potatoes, mushroom gravy, and tomato-cucumber salad.

That gravy bowl is tiny in real life, I'm telling you.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Not that you need to be told to have a happy day -- you're traipsing around Bali while the rest of us suckers are shoveling snow and fighting colds.

Good on ya!

Here's to many more years during which to flaunt your awesomeness :)
