Salmon Two Ways

Last night: baked salmon topped with fat-free Greek yogurt, mashed potatoes w/ spinach (similar to colcannon), shaved Mediterranean salad (now dubbed mandoline salad here), and some yum multigrain/seed bread...

Earlier this week: white wine-poached salmon w/ truffle butter + capers, vegetable couscous topped with pan-seared pineapple, and pita...

Newbery for Gaiman!

Woo-hoo!  Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book just won the Newbery Medal.

He's already blogged the early morning phone call here.

If you're on Twitter, his tweets were hilarious.

I just read this book for Middle Grade Madness. Loved it. Very happy for Mr. Gaiman.

10 Down, 90 to Go

So, yeah, I love lists of Things to Do in One's Lifetime, and also checking off those things as I do them. I'm totally not compulsive. Pinky swear.

Some folks scoff at such lists.

Some folks: Who is so-and-so to tell ME what I should do?

Me: Ooooo, new list?

Today, the Telegraph published a list of 100 novels someone at the Telegraph thinks we all should read before we become incapable of reading novels for whatever reason. (Thanks, Mr. Bransford, for the link.)

Normally, I find these lists whitey-centric, and since my List of Books I've Read is already very whitey-centric, I find them lacking. But this one is better than usual. It seems to have a good cross-section of literature, by which I mean: something from almost every continent (get with it, writerly scientists of Antartica!).

By my count I've read ten of the novels, but I'm busy with Middle Grade Madness. One of you other compulsive list-checker-offers jump on this and report back.

  • Dave joining us for a long weekend :)
  • ice skating on Mom + Chuck's pond

  • watching Wall*E three times
  • hearing this during one of the viewings:

"I'm tired of watching this movie without cake."

You read my mind, Ladybug.

JACK, or The Book Whose Title Blows

I've gotten this comment several times now, so I'm going to send an email to my betas for suggestions.  In the meantime, Dave and I brainstormed some possibilities:
  • The Chubby Redheaded Boy, 'Cause Everybody Loved Him So Much When Dave Was A Kid
  • Janitors Can't Be Trusted
  • Itchin' For A Punchin'
  • Fatty Fat Fatback and the Culottes of Terror
  • The Lightning Thief 2: Electric Boogaloo

I'm sure Chris will be relieved we're on the case. We're on it, dude, like snot on a kid!

First Public Reading

And I wasn't even that  nervous.

For those of you who have better things to do than follow my Tweets, I got to read the first chapter of JACK tonight at the San Antonio Writer's Guild monthly meeting. I got to do this because of this-here win.

I felt pretty good. My voice was loud enough, and Dave said I didn't rush, that I read deliberately. There were some laughs, and at appropriate places, so that was cool.

I did, though, feel as though I was holding my breath, like someone uncomfortable in water and trying to float. I also need to work on telling the story versus just reading aloud the story. I can think of about 15 performers who could help me do this. :)  These things are important because I'll do school/library appearances to market the eventual book, and the more captivating the better.

Unexpected bonuses ("boni"?) of the evening:
  • Got feedback for all of my contest entries
  • Got a Cash Prize for the 2nd place finish as well as the 1st
  • Met member Sanford who pointed me to Duotrope, a story market database
  • Had pie afterward to celebrate (as you do)

All in all, a good night!

Aber bitte mit Sahne

That's what I always say!

Amy sent me this excellent 1976 video of an Austrian dude singing about going to a pastry shop. Now we all know to ask for cream. Thanks, Amy!
