Slow Readers

Some slow things are good.

These things include:
slow food
slow music
slow massage
slow vacations

Being a slow reader? Makes me want to cry.

So many books! I keep adding them to my list, and trying not to think about how many I may never get to. Right now, there are 125 books on my To Read list at GoodReads.

Hahaha! *sniffle*

Not sure why I'm a slow reader.

Could be I don't have (make) the same amount of time to read as I did when I was a kid (when I seemed to read faster).

I know I've never gotten over the feeling I'm going to be tested on a book (thanks, high school English!).

And I know I pronounce words as I read them (though I don't move my mouth, sometimes my tongue and breath move as though I'm reading out loud).

I also know when I told my psychologist sister-in-law I have trouble wrapping my eyes from one line to the next if the page is wide, her expression was not encouraging (eek!).

Anybody else out there a slow reader? Have you embraced it? Have you tried to pick up your reading pace? Does your to-read list taunt you with a bad French accent?

Mine says my mother was a hamster.

The good news is: I should have a teaser of fellow Upstart Crow Literary client Matt Myklusch's debut novel for you next week. Yay!

My hubby is a slow reader and I think in part that's why he hates reading, lol.

I am a slooow reader. Even if I love a book it takes me a while. 1. I let myself become too distracted by the TV or Kevin. 2. I don't set aside enough time, so I end up just reading a chapter before bed. 3. I am really lazy.

I am finally reading HP 7 this week and have decided to do it as fast as I can. Kevin's been out a few nights so I have been able to read without the TV on. That helps. Also, I checked out the book and the CD from the library. I get a chapter or two in on the way to and from work in addition to what I read at night. Only 250 pages to go!

I'm a very slow reader with over 100 books on my to-read list. I generally only read before bed, but I need to make more time.

T. Anne - probably!

Tori - Good idea to alternate w/ the audiobook. Enjoy HP7!

Jenny - Sounds like several of us need to make more time for reading.

Will add: I've decided that just because a book's cover or some review made me want to read a book, doesn't mean I have to consider it great. I'm going to give the books on my list 50 pages to hook me. If they don't, they'll go on a new list called Didn't Hook Me, or something like that, and I'll move on.

Actually I am a very fast reader who has to remind myself to slow down and enjoy the ride. Otherwise it's like driving cross country on on interstate -- you miss most of the good stuff
Your trouble finding the beginning of the next line is very common. It's a visual tracking problem, and your eyes can be easily retained to improve. Unfortunately not all eye doctors are aware of this but you can even buy books designed for classroom teachers that give you what you need.
This kind of problem is very common. Personally my eyes have trouble when something crosses the midline of my sight. My eyes do this little cross and uncross dance and then I don't know where I am for a moment. It happened just now. It's worse when I'm tired. So, anyway, nothing is wrong with you, you can retrain it if you wish, but don't kid yourself that if you read faster your wish list would get shorter.
I think it expands in proportion to the speed that you read. I definitely have a read next list, usually piled in the living room, and several others of decreasing important, but I always end up reading whatever feels best at the moment. Why not? I'll never get them all read, anyway!
Great posts.

Teri - now that I think about it, it was probably my vocalizing as I read that made my sis-in-law look concerned, not my tracking problem.

But don't tell me my to-read list will just grow more quickly if I read faster! Ack! :D
