Writing Update: July 2009

Hey, remember that book I wrote? Then revised and submitted to agents? Then revised again and bit my nails while Chris submitted it to editors?

Yeah, that one.

Guess what I'm getting ready to do? (Hint: AGAIN.)

Whoever said "Revisions!" gets a prize. (Here's your prize.)

So the deal is this: 10 editors read the manuscript, and nearly all 10 gave the same feedback--the writing is good, but there are too many POVs, and the adult storylines are too prominent for a middle-grade audience.

The feedback was OVERWHELMINGLY consistent.

Which was nice, in two ways: 1) it's always good to hear I've used the language well, developed full characters, and created a vivid world; and 2) I know what I need to fix if I want to sell BRIAR-BOUND.

Which I do.

So it's about to get all spreadsheety up in here.

The juggling act includes keeping the things people liked, changing what they didn't, and making the story stronger in the process. Last week, I was talking through some ideas with Dave and hit on some great solutions. I'll discuss them this week with Chris, then take several weeks to implement them.

With a lot of effort and a little serendipity, BRIAR-BOUND should come out the other side a very tantalizing project.

I know I'm looking forward to reading it!

And the positive stuff sounds great...and certainly it'd be easier to fix POV than voice.

Yes, it is an easier fix. I'm basically refiltering several scenes through one of the remaining POVs. The great thing about this is it's an opportunity to develop those POV characters even more.
